Castillo Echauri in the immediate vicinity
A touch of the Middle Ages in Ybytyruzú Just a stone's throw from our hotel, Castillo Echauri majestically thrones on the hilltop in Vista Alegre. This architectural jewel was built in the style of a medieval castle and is unique in the Guairá region. The massive stone walls, the towers, and the charming details transport you to another time. But the real highlight is the view: from the castle's terraces, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view over the wide plain and the green mountain ranges of the Ybytyruzú Mountains. Especially at sunset ("Golden Hour"), this is one of the most romantic and photogenic places in all of Paraguay.

It is the perfect spot for a relaxed picnic and an authentic nature experience.

A Swimming Pool Created by Nature
Pozo Hondo (German: "Deep Well") lives up to its name and is arguably the most famous swimming spot in the region. Here, over millennia, the river has carved an impressive, deep basin into the solid rock. The water often shimmers in deep emerald green and offers wonderfully cool refreshment even on the hottest summer days. Framed by smooth rock formations perfect for sunbathing, this place is particularly popular with swimmers and adventure seekers who love diving into deep waters. It is a place full of energy and wild romance.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Difficulty Level (Walk): Easy to Medium. From the parking lot, a short path leads down to the riverbed. The path is not long, but walking on the rocks by the water requires some surefootedness (slippery when wet).
Note for Swimmers: As the name implies, the water here is deep. It is ideal for swimmers, but parents should be extra careful with small children.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
From the hotel in Vista Alegre, drive down towards Melgarejo and then continue to the attraction.

A View with Symbolism
Cerro de la Cruz is more than just a viewpoint – it is a landmark. Those who dare to make the climb are rewarded with a unique panorama: at your feet lies the town center of Melgarejo with its straight-as-an-arrow main street, nestled in the lush green of the surrounding fields and forests. The summit is crowned by a large cross, which gives the mountain its name and radiates an almost spiritual calm. This place is particularly popular with hiking enthusiasts and photographers who want to capture the contrast between the wild mountains of Ybytyruzú and civilization in the valley.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Some sporting effort is required here, but it is worth it.
Difficulty Level (Hiking): Medium (Moderate). Unlike viewpoints that can be reached almost by car, here you have to climb the summit on foot. The path is partly steep and leads uphill through the forest. A certain level of basic fitness is helpful.
The Experience: The ascent is a genuine nature experience ("Trekking light"), where you experience the flora of the Ybytyruzú up close. Once at the top, the feeling of having "made it" is priceless.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito): From the hotel in Vista Alegre, you first drive down into the valley, as the trailhead is usually located near the town center (near the Parque Ecológico Municipal).
Distance (to starting point): Approx. 10 to 12 kilometers (6-7.5 miles).
Driving time: About 20 minutes to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain. From there, the hike begins (plan approx. 1.5 to 2 hours for the ascent and descent combined).
The Roof of the Ybytyruzú
No visit to Independencia is complete without a detour to Cerro Akatí. At an altitude of around 600 meters (approx. 1,970 ft), this summit offers a view that is unparalleled nationwide. You will find Paraguay's most famous photo opportunity right here: the "bench on the edge," a simple wooden bench from which you seem to float above the infinite expanse of the valley. On clear days, the view extends to the city of Villarrica and far beyond the green hills of Guairá. Especially at sunset, Akatí transforms into a magical place when the sun bathes the landscape in deep gold and red.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Cerro Akatí is an adventure that (mostly) takes place on four wheels.
Accessibility (The Drive): The way to the summit is an adventure drive over steep, stony paths. A vehicle with some ground clearance (SUV/4x4) is strongly recommended. For guests without a suitable car, we are happy to organize a transfer or guide.
Difficulty Level (On-site): Easy. Once at the top, the terrain is flat. A short walk through a small forest tunnel leads you directly to the various viewing platforms (miradores). No mountaineering skills are needed – here, the focus is on enjoyment.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
From the hotel in Vista Alegre, you start an exciting panoramic drive.
Route: First drive down towards Melgarejo and then take the ascent to Akatí.
Distance: Approx. 15 to 20 kilometers (9-12 miles).
Driving time: Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes. The journey is part of the destination: you drive through rustic landscapes and dense vegetation.
The Perfect Place for the Whole Family
Cascada Don Alberto is arguably the most visitor-friendly waterfall in Colonia Independencia. Not only does a beautiful, wide waterfall await you here, gliding gently over the rocks, but also excellent infrastructure. The grounds are laid out like a park and offer amenities rarely found in the middle of the forest: well-kept paths, seating, tables, and restroom facilities. The shallow water and easy accessibility make this the ideal destination for families with children or for guests who want to enjoy a day of swimming fun without an "expedition feel."
Difficulty & Accessibility
Comfort comes first here.
Difficulty Level (Walk): Very Easy. Access to the waterfall is excellently developed. There are paved paths and stairs with railings.
The Experience: You don't have to walk far. It takes just a few minutes from the car to the water. The grounds are spacious and invite you to stroll or picnic.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
From the hotel in Vista Alegre, drive down into the valley towards the center/Melgarejo.
Distance: Approx. 10 to 12 kilometers (6-7.5 miles).
Driving time: Plan for about 20 minutes of driving time. The approach is generally uncomplicated, as the place is well signposted and located close to the main roads.
The Region's Flagship
Salto Suizo is undoubtedly the highlight of any trip to Colonia Independencia. With a drop of over 60 meters (approx. 200 feet), the water plunges spectacularly from a high rocky edge into the depths – a sight that inspires awe. Nestled in a basin full of lush, almost jungle-like vegetation, the waterfall offers a first-class nature experience. The air is filled with fine spray, which often conjures up beautiful rainbows on sunny days. At the foot of the falls, a natural pool invites you to cool off, while adventure seekers can even try rappelling directly through the waterfall.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Visiting Salto Suizo is a real adventure – both the drive and the path to the water.
The Drive: The last few kilometers to the entrance are often only passable with off-road vehicles (4x4). Tip: Rustic transfer vehicles are often available on-site to transport guests the last stretch from the normal parking lot – fun in itself!
Difficulty Level (Hike): Medium. From the entrance, a path with stairs and roots leads down into the basin. The path is manageable but requires a bit more fitness than the smaller falls (approx. 10-15 minutes descent/ascent). Sturdy shoes are mandatory here.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
From the hotel in Vista Alegre, this is a perfect half-day or day trip.
Distance: Approx. 15 to 20 kilometers (9-12 miles).
Driving time: Allow for about 40 to 50 minutes. Since the roads to Salto Suizo are partly sandy or stony, you have to drive slower. The route is scenically very attractive.
Reach the Very Top
For summiteers and ambitious hikers, Cerro Tres Kandú is an absolute must. As Paraguay's highest mountain, it offers not only a physical challenge but also an unparalleled nature experience. The path leads through dense, almost mystical Atlantic Rainforest, past giant ferns, ancient trees, and moss-covered rocks. The ascent is divided into 14 "stations" that mark the way to the summit. Once at the top, you literally stand on the roof of the country: the view from the wooden platform over the sheer endless green sea of the Ybytyruzú Reserve is arguably the most sublime moment Paraguay has to offer.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Please note: This is a strenuous sport-hike, not a casual walk.
Difficulty Level (Trekking): Hard. The ascent takes (depending on fitness) approx. 2.5 to 4 hours. The path is steep, often slippery, and requires the use of hands in some places (there are ropes and steel cables for support).
Prerequisites: Good physical condition, sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, and provisions are mandatory. We recommend starting early in the morning.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
Since the entry to Tres Kandú is located near the town of General Eugenio A. Garay, this is a planned day trip.
Drive: From the hotel in Vista Alegre, drive down to Melgarejo and follow the road towards General Garay.
Distance (to base camp): Approx. 30 to 35 kilometers (18-22 miles).
Driving time: Allow for about 45 to 60 minutes of driving time to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain.
